"Tubthumping" is a vocal released by British rock ring Chumbawamba from their 8th studio anthology, Tubthumper (1997). It is the band's nearly successful single, peaking at number two on the UK Singles Chart. It topped the charts in Australia, Canada, Ireland, Italy, New Zealand and hit number six on the US Billboard Hot 100[1] (although it topped the U.s. Modern Rock and Mainstream Top 40 charts). At the 1998 Brit Awards, "Tubthumping" was nominated for the Brit Award for All-time British Single. It sold 880,000 copies in the UK.[2]
Groundwork [edit]
The song was the group's lead single from Tubthumper, their major-label debut.[iii] Information technology was released on 11 Baronial 1997.[4] [5] Vocalist Dunstan Bruce retrospectively observed that, before the group wrote it, they "were in a mess: nosotros had get directionless and disparate". He credited "Tubthumping" with changing that, telling The Guardian, "It's not our most political or best song, only information technology brought us back together. The song is nearly us – as a form and as a ring. The dazzler of it was we had no idea how large it would exist."[half-dozen]
Writing and composition [edit]
A Leeds pub called the Fforde Grene served as the grouping's inspiration for the song; guitarist Boff Whalley told The Guardian that it was written near "the resilience of ordinary people";[6] musically, "Tubthumping" is a trip the light fantastic-rock, culling rock, and dance-punk song in D major.[7] [8] [9] [ten] [11]
Disquisitional reception [edit]
Larry Flick from Billboard wrote, "Some records but demand attention: 'Tubthumping' is one of the rare few. Yous can spend three times the track's running time plucking out the seemingly disparate sounds and assorted genre references—starting with the forceful alterna-rock guitar scratches, the hip-hop-derived beats, and the swing-style horns. Holding it all together are the kind of rousing, gang-like chants that you hear at football game games. Sounds odd, eh? Well, you lot won't soon forget this jam after first listen. And you'll probable exist hearing information technology on pop and modern rock stations for months to come. If this precious stone is indicative of the tone of the act's forthcoming anthology, it should be quite a head trip."[12] A reviewer from Daily Record described it equally an "irritating catchy drinking anthem from the anarchist band".[thirteen] Information technology was too called a "raucous anthem".[14] Pan-European magazine Music & Media said, "After a decade and a half spent every bit indie heroes this collective is likely to interruption into the mainstream in a big way".[15] Ian Hyland of the Sun Mirror rated it 8 out of ten, writing, "Sing a terrace chant, mention lager and the rugby boys will be making boozed-up homo pyramids on the dance flooring in seconds. And you'll have a monster hit – skillful work, chum."[16] Troy J. Augusto from Variety declared it as a "drinking-and-dancing canticle" and "the quirk hit of the flavor".[17]
In The Village Voice's Pazz & Jop poll for 1997, "Tubthumping" was voted the second-best single of the year.[xviii] Australian radio station Triple J ranked it No. three in its Triple J Hottest 100 for the same year.[19] Author Bruce Pollock included it in his 2005 book "The 7,500 Most Of import Songs of 1944-2000".[xx] "Tubthumping" also placed at No. 12 in Rolling Stone 's 2007 listing of the "twenty Well-nigh Annoying Songs"[21] and at No. 8 in the magazine'south 2011 list of the "Top ten Ane-Hit Wonders of All Time".[22]
